Black History Month: Celebrating Courage, Freedom and Resilience

Every October, Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the history, achievements and contributions of Black communities across the UK.

At Global Guardians, our work is centred around people and communities. Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusion, representation and respect, while recognising the individuals and communities whose courage and resilience have helped shape our society.

Why Black History Month Matters to Us

Our values guide how we work with our Guardians, property owners, partners and each other.

Courage, freedom, resilience and being people-led are principles that shape the culture we want to create. They mean having the confidence to challenge perceptions, treating people with honesty and respect, listening to different experiences and recognising that stronger communities are built when people feel valued.

Black History Month gives us an opportunity to reflect on these principles while celebrating Black history, culture and achievement.

Creating Communities Where People Feel Valued

Although our work begins with buildings, our approach has always been about people.

For 15 years, Global Guardians has helped protect vacant properties while providing working professionals with affordable and flexible living spaces. Throughout that time, community has remained an important part of what we do.

Our Guardians come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and experiences. We want the communities within the properties we manage to be places where people are treated with dignity and respect, feel welcome and have the freedom to be themselves.

This reflects one of our core values: Freedom, not without care. We believe people should have the freedom to make meaningful choices, grow and express themselves, supported by a culture of respect, understanding and responsibility.

It also reflects our commitment to being People-led, not people pleasers. For us, being people-led means approaching relationships with genuine care and empathy, listening to different perspectives and communicating openly and honestly.

Courage and Resilience, Together

Our value of Courage, through everything encourages us to challenge stigma, question established perceptions and speak with integrity, even when conversations are difficult.

Alongside this sits Resilience, together. Meaningful progress is rarely achieved by individuals acting alone. It comes through people supporting one another, listening, learning and working together to create positive change.

These principles extend beyond Black History Month. Inclusion is not something that should be recognised for only one month of the year; it should be reflected in how people are treated, how decisions are made and how communities are supported every day.

Looking Forward

This Black History Month, we celebrate Black history, culture, achievements and the contributions Black communities continue to make across the UK.

We also recognise that celebrating history should be accompanied by continued learning and action. At Global Guardians, we remain committed to creating an environment where people are respected, different perspectives are valued and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Through courage, freedom, a people-led approach and resilience together, we will continue working towards stronger and more inclusive communities.
