Celebrating 15 Years of Global Guardians: Guardian Stories!

This year marks 15 years of Global Guardians, celebrating not only the protection of vacant properties across the UK but also the creation of affordable homes for thousands of working professionals.

To mark this milestone, we chose to focus on the people at the heart of our community. Throughout June, Guardians were invited to share their experiences of property guardianship as part of our Guardian Stories Competition, with prizes awarded to three standout entries. The response was overwhelming, revealing stories that went far beyond affordability to highlight the importance of safety, community and belonging.

Three themes consistently emerged. First was security. Many Guardians described the reassurance of living in professionally managed, carefully vetted communities where they felt safe and respected. Secondly, affordability remained a vital benefit, enabling people to live closer to work, pursue career opportunities and manage the challenges of today’s housing market. Finally, many celebrated the opportunity to live in distinctive buildings, from former schools to historic properties, preserving unique spaces while making them home.

Our winning stories reflected these values. Fabioula, our first-place winner, shared how guardianship transformed her sense of security after leaving an unsafe living environment. Sarajane, who has been a Guardian for almost a decade, described how guardianship provided stability during a period of homelessness and allowed her to experience life in remarkable historic buildings. Munja highlighted the supportive community she found through Global Guardians, alongside affordable accommodation that significantly improved her quality of life.

These stories demonstrate that property guardianship offers more than affordable housing. It provides stability, opportunity and a genuine sense of home while ensuring vacant buildings remain secure and cared for.
